A really nice original set of five Pierre Jeanneret stools, dating from circa 1965 and originally from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh, India.
The stools are constructed with circular solid teak seats supported on three gently splayed timber legs. A circular blue painted iron ring joins the legs towards the base, strengthening the construction while also providing a practical footrest.
This is the same stool design as another set we currently have for sale, but at a different height. Jeanneret produced stools in a number of heights for Chandigarh according to their intended use, and this version, at 51.5 cm high, sits between the low stools and the taller bar-height examples.
What we particularly like about this group is that the five stools have remained together as an original set. Each carries an institutional marking and a different number around the edge of the seat, indicating that they were individually numbered and used together in the same room.
The teak has developed a very good, warm patina across all five stools. There are the expected dings, dents, scratches and areas of wear accumulated through decades of use, while the undersides of the seats retain the darker, less exposed surfaces and patination that we would expect to see on pieces of this age.
The painted iron footrests also show considerable evidence of use. Much of the original painted surface has worn through in places, with areas of oxidation and exposed metal visible beneath. We have deliberately retained this rather than refinishing the rings, as the wear is entirely consistent with the age and original function of the stools.
The five stools work very well together. There are small differences in colour, wear and surface from one to another, as you would expect from furniture that has been used for around sixty years, but as a group they have a very coherent appearance.
At 51.5 cm high, they are also an unusually useful height. They can be used as occasional seating or individually around a room as small side stools, while the original group of five makes a much stronger visual statement when kept together.
The stools have been carefully cleaned and conserved, retaining the original patination, institutional markings and wear to both the teak and painted iron footrests.
We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.
