A really nice set of three Pierre Jeanneret stools, dating from 1965 and acquired together as a group. The stools came from a government building in Chandigarh, India, where they would have been used as everyday institutional furniture.
Each stool is constructed from three gently splayed Burmese teak legs supporting a substantial circular solid teak seat. The legs are connected by a single iron ring, which provides both structural support and a practical footrest. A second, smaller iron ring sits directly beneath the seat, a construction detail that we associate with earlier examples of this stool. On later examples we have handled, this upper ring was replaced by wooden supports beneath the seat. It is a small detail, but one we always look for when examining these stools.
The solid teak seats have the characteristic concave surface found on Jeanneret's stools from this period. The subtle dishing softens the substantial timber and makes the stools surprisingly comfortable to sit on, while the rounded edge of the seat sits neatly above the three tapering legs.
We were fortunate to find all three stools together. They are the same height, with closely related colour and patina, and work particularly well as a group. There are natural variations between them, as you would expect after decades of institutional use, but they remain a very cohesive set.
There is something about an odd number of pieces that often works particularly well in an interior, and we think that is certainly the case with these three. Whether used as stools, occasional side tables or plant stands, they are really nice, practical pieces that can be used together or individually around a room.
The Burmese teak has developed a rich, warm surface, with numerous small scratches, dings, dents and marks retained throughout. The seats show particularly good evidence of use, with variations in colour and wear across the tops that have developed naturally over time.
The iron footrests and upper rings retain much of their original painted finish alongside areas of paint loss, oxidation and exposed metal. This wear has been preserved rather than refinished, allowing the ironwork to sit naturally alongside the aged surface of the teak.
The stools have been carefully conserved in London and are structurally solid and entirely usable. The teak has been cleaned and waxed while retaining the original surface and accumulated patina, and the ironwork has been conserved without removing the surviving paint, oxidation or evidence of institutional use. As with all of our Chandigarh furniture, the intention has been to preserve as much of the original material and surface as possible rather than making the pieces look newly restored.
We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.
