A rare Pierre Jeanneret Tall Double Ring Stool, dating from 1965–66. The stool was reported to have come from Panjab University, which would be consistent with its institutional form and use, and it retains an original institutional marking to one of the legs.
The stool has an unusually tall and slender profile, constructed from three gently splayed solid teak legs supporting a circular solid teak seat. Two large iron rings connect the legs at different heights, providing both structural support and footrests. The combination of the long vertical teak legs and circular iron rings gives the stool a particularly strong architectural quality when viewed from the side.
A third, smaller iron ring sits directly beneath the seat. This is a feature we have seen on early examples of this stool; on later versions the ring was replaced by wooden supports beneath the seat. Viewed from below, the relationship between the three teak legs, two large footrest rings and smaller upper ring can be seen particularly clearly.
This is a stool we have encountered very rarely. Despite handling a large number of Pierre Jeanneret pieces over the years, this is the only example we have had the opportunity to buy. We have seen a very small number of others offered for sale internationally, but it remains one of the less frequently encountered Chandigarh stool designs.
All of the components are original and the stool retains considerable evidence of its institutional working life. The solid teak seat has developed a deep and varied patina, with numerous scratches, dents, dings and marks. There is also a substantial old chip and loss to the edge of the seat, which we have deliberately retained rather than attempting to disguise or reconstruct.
The iron rings retain an equally strong original surface. Areas of the original blue painted finish remain visible alongside paint loss, surface rust and oxidation, all consistent with decades of heavy institutional use. The combination of surviving paint and exposed iron sits naturally alongside the heavily patinated teak.
The stool has been carefully restored by our trusted conservator and is structurally solid and entirely usable. The restoration has concentrated on conservation rather than renewal, retaining the original timber, ironwork, institutional marking and accumulated patina. The heavy wear, old chip to the seat, paint loss and oxidation have deliberately been preserved as part of the history of the piece.
For us, this is a particularly interesting Jeanneret stool. Its unusual height and slender proportions give it a very different presence from the lower Chandigarh stools we more frequently encounter, while the three-ring construction and surviving blue paint make it immediately distinctive.
We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.
