An original Pierre Jeanneret small stool from Chandigarh, India, dating from 1960 and originally used at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI).
The stool combines a substantial circular solid teak seat with a slender three-legged iron base. The tripod legs are connected by a triangular iron footrest, giving the stool a simple and particularly well-balanced structure characteristic of Jeanneret's utilitarian furniture for Chandigarh.
What particularly attracted us to this example is the green-painted iron base. The green is not the original finish but was applied historically during the stool's working life. Over many years of use the paint has chipped, flaked and worn away in places, giving the base a particularly individual character.
Green is not a colour we would normally associate with these stool bases. Over the years we have handled examples painted black, white and blue, but this is the only example we have owned with a green-painted base. Rather than remove the later paint and make the stool appear more uniform, we chose to preserve it. For us, it forms part of the history of the piece and provides a visible record of its long institutional life.
The solid teak seat has developed the rich surface and institutional patina we would expect from more than sixty years of use. It retains numerous small marks, knocks and variations in colour, all of which we have deliberately preserved. The timber has been lightly cleaned and waxed rather than refinished.
The stool required very little restoration. Over time several of the screws securing the teak seat to the iron base had been lost. Our conservator has replaced these with carefully selected vintage screws of the appropriate size and type. The replacements have been sensitively matched and are virtually indistinguishable from those that remain.
We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.
We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.
