A pair of original Pierre Jeanneret medium-height stools from Chandigarh, India, dating from circa 1960 and originally from Panjab University.

Each stool has a substantial circular seat made from solid Burmese teak, with a gently dished, concave upper surface. The seats are mounted directly onto slender painted iron tripod bases, with the three legs connected by a circular footrest. It is an extremely simple piece of furniture, but one that works particularly well: the warmth and weight of the teak seat contrasts beautifully with the lightness of the iron structure beneath.

Both stools retain a particularly good level of original patina developed through decades of institutional use. The teak has a rich, dark surface with numerous scratches, dents, marks and variations in colour, while the iron bases retain areas of their original painted finish together with oxidation and surface wear.

Importantly, the stools also retain original institutional markings. These remain visible around the edges of the teak seats and are a particularly attractive part of their history. We have deliberately retained these markings, together with the associated wear, rather than attempting to make the stools appear newer than they are.

The stools have been carefully cleaned and sympathetically restored by specialist UK-based museum furniture restorer. The teak has been lightly hand-waxed over the existing surface, preserving the depth and character of the original patina. The iron bases have similarly been cleaned while retaining their original paint, oxidation and historic wear.

We particularly like these stools and regularly use examples ourselves at the gallery. Their proportions and straightforward construction make them extremely versatile: they work equally well as occasional seating or as small side tables, while the heavily patinated teak gives each example considerable individual character.

We currently have a number of examples of this model and have arranged them into different matching sets according to height, colour and patina. If a particular number of stools is required, please do get in touch. Subject to availability, we can put together an appropriately matched group and provide photographs of the individual stools before purchase.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.

We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.

We offer local, national and international shipping.
