A rare wrought iron Occasional Table produced by the Antoine Durenne Foundry in France and dating from the 1930s.

The design itself originates with the Durenne Foundry in the late nineteenth century and was subsequently selected by Jean-Michel Frank for use within his interiors. Frank frequently incorporated objects and works by other makers into his decorative schemes, and this particular Durenne model became associated with his work through this use. Documented examples of the table appear in the literature relating to Jean-Michel Frank and the Durenne Foundry.

The table is beautifully constructed from slender wrought iron, worked throughout to create an irregular, almost branch-like surface. The circular top is supported by four angled iron braces which converge around the central stem. Below are two opposing pairs of decorative quatrefoil-shaped elements, bound at the junctions, before the structure opens into four long, gently curved legs.

There is a wonderful contrast between the delicacy of the ironwork and the strength of the overall construction. Viewed from different angles, the arrangement of the curved legs, central decoration and radiating supports continually changes, giving what is essentially a very simple table a particularly sculptural quality.

The table is unmarked. Its attribution to the Antoine Durenne Foundry is based upon the documented model and its distinctive construction.

The original tables were fitted with metal mesh tops. Part of this remained when we acquired the table but was no longer sufficiently complete to function as the top. A circular glass top has therefore been fitted, allowing the structure of the ironwork beneath to remain clearly visible.

The table has undergone minimal restoration, with the intention of preserving as much of the aged surface as possible. The wrought iron retains a wonderfully dark and varied patina, with the irregularities and surface character developed through age and use remaining clearly visible. The table is structurally sound, sits flat to the ground and is entirely practical for use.

We particularly like the fact that although the model predates Jean-Michel Frank, he recognised the strength of the design and selected it for use within his interiors. It is an unusual example of an earlier French design finding a natural place within the restrained and sophisticated interiors for which Frank became known.

A rare and highly sculptural piece of French ironwork, combining the history of the Durenne Foundry with an important association with Jean-Michel Frank.
