An authentic set of three Pierre Jeanneret medium-height stools from Chandigarh, India, dating from circa 1960 and originally associated with Punjab University. These stools are an excellent example of the utilitarian modernism that emerged from Jeanneret’s architectural and furniture programme for Chandigarh, combining a simple industrial structure with the warmth and sculptural qualities of solid teak.

Each circular seat is crafted from substantial solid Burmese teak and displays a rich, dark patina developed through decades of use. True to Jeanneret’s practical approach to furniture, the seats feature subtly dished, concave surfaces, giving the substantial timber a softer and more comfortable profile.

The solid teak tops are mounted directly onto slender painted iron tripod bases, with the three legs joined by intersecting round footrests. The combination of the circular wooden seats and metal bases gives the stools a particularly elegant balance between organic material and architectural structure. This particular set retains its light greyish-blue painted bases, a colour widely used by Pierre Jeanneret throughout furniture designed for Chandigarh.

The stools retain extensive historic wear, oxidation and character marks acquired through decades of institutional use. This includes minor rusting and areas of paint loss to the iron bases, together with numerous small dents, scratches, marks and indentations to the teak. We feel this level of wear is entirely appropriate to their history and gives the stools an authenticity and character that is impossible to reproduce.

Despite their relatively simple construction, the stools have been carefully cleaned and sympathetically restored by specialist UK-based museum furniture restorers. The teak has been lightly hand-waxed, preserving the depth and character of its original patina while leaving the surfaces clean and well presented. The iron bases have also been cleaned while retaining their natural age, oxidation and historic character.

We particularly like these stools and regularly use examples ourselves at the gallery. However they are used, the pieces themselves stand up well and are supercool. Their proportions and simple construction make them exceptionally versatile, and we have supplied similar examples for use in galleries, offices and private residences. Equally successful as occasional seating or side tables, they work particularly well in interiors where their architectural simplicity can be appreciated.

This set is priced and offered as a group of three. The stools have been selected as a well-matched group, while retaining the individual variations, wear and character that naturally come with original Chandigarh furniture of this age.

We currently have Pierre Jeanneret stools in varying heights, from low to medium, as offered here, to high bar-height examples. If you have a particular requirement for stools to use at a fixed height, please do get in touch and we can talk through the available options.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request. We offer local, national and international shipping.
