An original Pierre Jeanneret Teak & Cane Stool, dating from circa 1960 and made for the Chandigarh project in India.

We acquired three examples of these stools together from a private residence in Chandigarh. The three share the same provenance and have remained together since we purchased them. They are available individually, allowing a single stool to be used on its own or several to be grouped together.

The design is beautifully simple. Each stool is constructed in solid teak with four slightly tapered legs connected by horizontal stretchers. The rectangular seat frame has gently curved front and rear rails, creating a subtle concave profile to the woven cane seat.

It is a small detail, but one that makes a considerable difference to the design. Rather than simply placing a flat caned seat onto a rectangular frame, the shallow curve gives the stool a softer profile and makes it more comfortable in use. Seen from above, the relationship between the curved rails and woven cane is particularly clear.

The teak on all three stools has developed a very good patina through decades of use. The surfaces show the scratches, dents, marks, worn edges and variations in colour that we like to retain on original Chandigarh furniture. Although the three stools came from the same residence, each has aged slightly differently, giving every example its own individual surface.

The stools have been fully structurally restored by our trusted conservator. All of the wooden elements are original. The teak has been lightly cleaned and waxed, retaining the historical patina rather than refinishing the frames.

As with the Chandigarh seating we restore, the cane has been replaced so that the stools can be used with confidence. The new cane has then been sympathetically toned down to sit comfortably alongside the much older teak rather than appearing conspicuously new.

For us, these are extremely useful pieces of Jeanneret furniture. Their relatively small scale allows them to work as occasional stools, but they are equally useful beside a chair or sofa as small side tables. A single example works well on its own, while two or three make a particularly good group.

The three stools are priced individually. If more than one is required, we are happy to send detailed photographs of the available examples so that the preferred stools can be selected according to colour, patina and individual character.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.
