A large and beautifully proportioned Swedish Chesterfield sofa, dating from the early 1900s and measuring an impressive 247 cm in length.

The sofa takes the familiar form of the traditional English Chesterfield but has a noticeably lighter and more elegant profile. The continuous deeply buttoned back sweeps into the rolled arms, while the unusually long seat gives the sofa a strong, generous presence.

The frame is constructed in oak and raised on four substantial turned mahogany legs with brass castors. The dark timber provides a strong contrast to the upholstery and gives the sofa a more refined appearance than the heavier bases often associated with traditional Chesterfields.

We had the sofa completely reupholstered in an egg-yolk yellow mohair velvet from Rose Uniacke. The colour was chosen very deliberately. Rather than trying to recreate the dark leather upholstery normally associated with a Chesterfield, we wanted something that would emphasise the sculptural form of the sofa and bring out the rhythm of the deep buttoning. The mohair has a rich colour which changes subtly with the light and works especially well across such a large upholstered surface.

For us, what makes this sofa so appealing is the combination of its scale and surprisingly elegant proportions. At nearly two and a half metres long it has considerable presence, yet the low back, sweeping arms and turned legs prevent it from feeling cumbersome.

The sofa has been fully and professionally reupholstered. As part of the work, the seat webbing was replaced, the springs were retightened and the padding renewed before the sofa was upholstered in the new mohair velvet. It has not been used since the work was completed. The original mahogany legs retain the dents, marks and wear accumulated over more than a century, providing a pleasing contrast to the newly upholstered body.
