A rare group of twelve Model FH4103 Heart Chairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1952 and produced in Denmark by Fritz Hansen.
The Heart Chair is one of Wegner's most distinctive early dining chair designs. Its name derives from the characteristic shape of the seat, while the curved backrest and three-legged construction give the chair a particularly light and economical form. The chairs were also designed to stack, an important practical consideration that becomes especially apparent when seen as a larger group.
This group comprises two sets of six chairs. One set has oak frames with teak-veneered plywood seats, while the second has beech frames with teak-veneered plywood seats. Although there are subtle differences between the two sets, the age, colour and patina across the twelve chairs allow them to work particularly coherently as a larger group.
We have deliberately kept the twelve chairs together as it is rare to find the model available in this quantity. There is natural variation in tone and patina from chair to chair, developed through more than seventy years of use, which we feel adds considerably to the character of the group.
Partial Fritz Hansen ink stamps remain visible to the underside of most of the chairs.
The chairs can be purchased as the complete group of twelve or as two sets of six.
All twelve chairs have been carefully cleaned and waxed rather than heavily restored. The timber retains the marks, variation and patina associated with age and use, and all of the chairs are structurally solid and ready for regular use.
One of the particularly successful aspects of the Heart Chair is how little material Wegner needed to create such a recognisable design. The three slender legs, circular seat and curved backrest give the chair a remarkably economical construction, while the ability to stack makes it as practical today as it was when designed in 1952.
