A large hand-carved communal rice mortar from Nagaland in Northeast India, dating from approximately the 1930s–60s.
Measuring almost two metres in length, the mortar would originally have been used in the preparation of rice and other grains. Three deep circular mortar holes are carved into the upper surface, allowing several people to work around the piece at the same time.
The construction is remarkably simple and direct. The entire piece is carved from a substantial section of Hollock wood, with a long, gently irregular working surface raised on a broad central base. The ends extend well beyond the base on either side, creating the distinctive elongated form and low profile.
For us, much of the appeal lies in the surface of the timber. Years of repeated use have worn and softened the wood, particularly around the three mortar holes and across the upper surface. Deep grain, old cracks, tool marks, small repairs and variations in colour remain visible throughout, giving a very clear sense of the object's working life.
There is also a natural irregularity to the form. The top rises and falls slightly along its length rather than following a perfectly straight line, while the ends and edges retain the uneven character of something shaped by hand rather than manufactured to precise dimensions.
Although made as an entirely practical object, its scale and simple form give it a strong sculptural presence. At 195 cm long, it works extremely well today as a low table or freestanding object, while the three original mortar holes remain an immediate indication of its original purpose.
The piece has been lightly cleaned and waxed rather than heavily restored, retaining the wear and patina accumulated through decades of use. Historical repairs, age-related cracks, marks and irregularities remain throughout and form an integral part of the piece.
