A particularly elegant pair of Croisillon table lamps, made in Argentina by Comte circa 1942 after the celebrated design by Jean-Michel Frank.

The lamps are constructed in bronze, with four intersecting vertical planes forming the distinctive cruciform bases from which the Croisillon design takes its name. The simplicity of the construction gives the lamps a remarkably architectural quality, with their appearance changing subtly as they are viewed from different angles.

Jean-Michel Frank worked extensively with Comte during his time in Argentina, and the Buenos Aires firm was responsible for producing a number of his furniture and lighting designs. The Croisillon lamp was one of Frank's most distinctive forms and was produced during his lifetime in a number of materials and variations.

This pair was made by Comte circa 1942, shortly after Jean-Michel Frank's death in 1941. Although clearly derived from Frank's Croisillon lamp and produced by the same Buenos Aires firm responsible for executing his designs in Argentina, the dimensions differ from documented period examples produced during his lifetime.

For this reason, we have deliberately catalogued the lamps as “After Jean-Michel Frank” rather than presenting them as original Jean-Michel Frank lifetime examples.

The lamps came from the collection of a longstanding collector of Jean-Michel Frank's work, where they had remained for many years before we acquired them.

The bronze bases have been lightly cleaned but not repolished, allowing the naturally aged surface and patina to remain. Both lamps have been professionally rewired and are ready for regular use. The simple paper shades are new and were chosen specifically for the lamps.

At 45 cm high including the shades, the lamps are particularly well proportioned for use as bedside or side table lamps. The restrained bronze bases have considerable presence without appearing visually heavy, while the cruciform construction gives them a strong sculptural quality from every angle.

An unusual pair of early posthumous Comte productions of one of Jean-Michel Frank's most recognisable lighting designs, made shortly after his death and retaining a direct connection to the manufacturer responsible for producing his work in Argentina.
