A wonderfully large and sculptural angled sofa, dating from the 1970s and sourced in Italy.

The designer and manufacturer are currently unknown, and the sofa carries no visible labels or markings. Nevertheless, it is a particularly well-considered piece, with a strong architectural quality typical of some of the more interesting Italian upholstered furniture of the period.

Measuring approximately three metres across, the sofa is constructed as one continuous piece. The frame changes direction at two points, creating a broad, shallow angular form rather than a conventional straight sofa. Three individual seat cushions follow the geometry of the frame, with corresponding upholstered back cushions and substantial squared arms at either end.

One of the things we particularly like about this sofa is how good it looks from every angle. The back is completely upholstered and follows the same faceted line as the front, giving the piece a strong sculptural presence and allowing it to sit very comfortably away from a wall in the centre of a room.

The sofa retains its original pale golden-beige velvet upholstery. The fabric has developed considerable variation in colour and surface through age and use, which can be clearly seen in the photographs. It remains perfectly usable as it is, and there is something rather appealing about the faded original velvet, although we feel that professional reupholstery would bring the piece to another level.

The sofa sits low to the ground on small tapered wooden feet. The timber appears possibly to be ash, although without documentary evidence we prefer not to identify the species definitively.

Structurally the frame remains very good. Despite its considerable size, the low proportions and angled construction prevent the sofa from appearing overly heavy, while the continuous frame gives it a particularly satisfying and coherent form.

A very handsome and unusual 1970s sofa, combining generous proportions with a restrained architectural shape. For us, its greatest strength is its sculptural quality: it looks fantastic from all angles and would work particularly well positioned centrally within a large room where the complete form can be appreciated.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
