A rare pair of table lamps designed by Jean-Michel Frank and produced by Comte in Buenos Aires, Argentina, circa 1940.

The lamps have remained together since they were originally produced and are accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Jean-Michel Frank covering both pieces. For us, this is an important part of owning any piece by Jean-Michel Frank.

The design is remarkably simple. Each lamp is constructed around a tall, tapering wrought-iron stem supported on three slender feet that spread outwards from the base. It is this distinctive three-footed construction that has led to the design being nicknamed the ‘Crows Feet’ lamp.

The name is not an original Jean-Michel Frank model designation, nor is it used on the Comité certificate, but it describes the form extremely well. The three narrow iron feet extend away from the central stem in a manner reminiscent of a bird's foot.

What we especially like is the surface of the iron. Rather than being perfectly smooth, the stems and feet have a heavily textured, almost hammered appearance. The dark surface has softened and varied with age, giving the relatively simple construction considerable depth when viewed closely.

The proportions are equally well judged. The stem tapers gradually as it rises, becoming progressively lighter towards the top, while the three-footed base gives the lamps a surprisingly delicate stance. There is very little material involved, yet the lamps have a strong presence both individually and as a pair.

Frank's work in Argentina represents a fascinating chapter of his career. Comte in Buenos Aires produced a number of his furniture and lighting designs during the late 1930s and early 1940s, including several documented table lamps in painted or patinated iron.

The lamps have been carefully cleaned and professionally rewired while retaining their original aged surfaces. They are presented with newly made shades, chosen for their simple proportions and to sit quietly with the lamps rather than compete with the ironwork.

The pair is in very good original condition, with the marks, surface variation and patination expected from pieces of this age. We have deliberately retained these surfaces rather than attempting to make the lamps appear newly restored.

For us, the appeal of these lamps lies in their simplicity. Three feet, a tapering stem and a shade are essentially all that is required. The quality comes from the proportions, the surface of the iron and the small differences between the two lamps. The fact that they have remained together and are authenticated together by the Comité Jean-Michel Frank makes the pair all the more appealing.
