A rare and particularly elegant pair of Jean-Michel Frank ‘X’ table lamps, the model created circa 1938 and produced in Brazil by Henrique Liberal.

The lamps are constructed from palmwood and brass, with the distinctive X-shaped bases giving the design its name. The simplicity of the form is characteristic of Frank’s work, combining carefully considered proportions with an unusually refined use of materials. The warm, richly figured palmwood contrasts beautifully with the brass fittings, which have developed a soft patina through age.

The pair has excellent provenance. They were formerly in the collection of Linneo Eduardo de Paula Machado in Rio de Janeiro and originally formed part of a group of four examples of the model. The other pair was subsequently sold by PIASA, Paris, in their French Design sale of 23 February 2023, lot 85. Like the present pair, they were catalogued as a Henrique Liberal edition, Brazil, with provenance from the Linneo Eduardo de Paula Machado collection.

The lamps are accompanied by a certificate from the Comité Jean-Michel Frank, further supporting their attribution.

Both lamps have been carefully cleaned while retaining the character and patina developed through age and use. They have been professionally rewired and are ready for regular use. The paper shades are later replacements and were chosen specifically for the lamps; their simple form works particularly well with the restrained character of the bases.

A rare opportunity to acquire an original pair of one of Jean-Michel Frank’s most distinctive lighting designs, with particularly strong provenance and a documented relationship to the other two examples from the original group.
