An exceptionally rare original LC II wall light designed by Le Corbusier for his architectural projects in India. Dating from 1954, the light was produced for use in Chandigarh and is a particularly good example of the simple, functional lighting developed alongside the architecture of the new city.

This particular example came from the exterior of a private residence in Chandigarh, where decades of exposure have given the light an exceptionally characterful surface.

Constructed from folded sheet metal, the design is remarkably simple. A large curved outer shade is held within a rectangular wall-mounted frame, with the shade pivoting on a horizontal axis. The angle can be adjusted using the original locking nuts at either end, allowing the light to be directed upwards or downwards. The original internal aluminium reflector also remains in place.

The surface of this example is particularly attractive. Areas of its blue-green painted finish survive across the shade and supporting frame, interspersed with extensive areas of naturally oxidised metal. Rather than attempting to regularise or refinish the surface, we have preserved the existing finish and patina, including the variations in colour, oxidation, wear and paint loss that have developed through decades of exterior use.

Originally conceived as an architectural light rather than a decorative object, the LC II has an extraordinary sculptural presence. The large curved shade and exposed supporting structure are characteristic of Le Corbusier’s approach to his Indian projects, where furniture and lighting were conceived as integral elements of the architecture.

We currently have five original examples available. Each has developed a distinctly different surface through age and use and may be purchased individually or as part of a group. Additional photographs showing several examples together can be provided upon request.

The light can be professionally rewired to suit the electrical standards of the purchaser’s country. Outdoor-rated lampholders can also be fitted if required, subject to discussion regarding the intended application.
