An original LC II wall light designed by Le Corbusier in 1954, one of the most distinctive lighting designs associated with his architectural projects in India.

The LC II was used in a number of Le Corbusier's buildings in India, including projects in Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. Conceived as a functional architectural light rather than a decorative object, the design is remarkably simple: a curved sheet-metal shade supported within a rectangular iron frame and held away from the wall.

This example is the largest version, often referred to as the Grand Model, measuring 57 cm wide. It was removed from the exterior of a private residence in Chandigarh, India.

The shade pivots within the supporting frame, allowing the direction of the light to be altered. The adjustment mechanism retains its original locking nuts on either side, and the original aluminium reflector remains beneath the shade.

A particularly appealing aspect of this example is its surface. Much of the original green-grey painted finish remains, having weathered considerably through decades of exterior use. Where the paint has worn away, the oxidised metal beneath is exposed, producing a naturally varied combination of muted green, grey and reddish-brown tones. The finish and patina have been carefully preserved.

Its large scale, straightforward industrial construction and heavily patinated finish give the light a strong sculptural quality. It has considerable presence as an architectural object even when it is not illuminated.

We currently have five examples of the LC II wall light available. Each has its own individual surface, patina and signs of age and use, and we would be happy to provide photographs of all five examples for comparison.

During this time, we have handled a large number of original examples and have developed considerable first-hand experience of their construction, materials, markings, restoration and provenance. The light can be professionally rewired to meet the electrical requirements of its destination.
