A set of three ‘Tratten’ wall lights designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1950s.

The design is remarkably simple, consisting of a large conical, heavily patinated copper shade supported away from the wall by a curved arm and circular wall plate. The broad opening of the cone directs the light outwards, while the purity of its conical form gives the lamp a strong graphic presence from almost any angle.

Each light is made from copper and has developed a substantial natural patina over many years. The surfaces now range from deep brown and almost black through to areas of blue-green oxidation. Importantly, the three lights have aged together and remain a convincing group, while each has developed its own individual variations in colour and surface.

For us, the patina is a significant part of the appeal of this particular set. We have deliberately left the copper in its naturally aged state rather than over-cleaning it. There are also small areas of paint loss to the inside of the shades, along with marks and surface variations consistent with their age and use, all clearly visible in the photographs.

The simplicity of the Tratten design is deceptive. There is very little unnecessary detail: the cone forms both the shade and the principal visual element, while the curved support positions it away from the wall. At 32 cm deep, the lights project substantially into the room and have considerably more presence than their relatively compact dimensions might suggest.

The three lights work particularly well as a group, either positioned together or repeated along a wall, although their simple form also allows them to work individually.

Although originally designed as outdoor lights, we feel they work equally well indoors, where their sculptural form and heavily patinated surfaces give them an entirely different character.

The lights have been lightly cleaned and are presented in good vintage condition. Their heavily and unevenly patinated surfaces have intentionally been retained.
