A particularly elegant and rare pair of guéridon tables by Jean-Michel Frank, dating from 1938 and executed in Buenos Aires by Comte.

The tables are exceptionally light and refined in construction. Each circular woven cane top is supported by three slender painted iron rods, which converge through a central ring before separating again to form the three legs. Small iron rings suspended beneath the edge of the top provide an additional decorative detail without disturbing the simplicity of the overall form.

The result is characteristic of Frank's ability to create furniture of remarkable visual lightness from relatively simple materials. The delicacy of the painted iron structure contrasts beautifully with the warmth and texture of the woven cane, while the tall proportions give the tables an unusually elegant presence.

The pair was produced by Comte in Buenos Aires in 1938 and consists of original Jean-Michel Frank period examples. The date and attribution are confirmed by a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Jean-Michel Frank, which covers both tables.

The tables came from the same longstanding collection of Jean-Michel Frank furniture as our pair of Comte wrought-iron and rattan console tables and had remained in that collection for many years before we acquired them.

Importantly, the woven cane tops are original to the tables and remain intact, without breaks. They retain an old stained or varnished surface which we believe to be original and have developed a rich, naturally aged colour over time. The close weave and variation in tone are particularly attractive and form an important part of the character of the pair.

The painted iron frames also retain considerable age and patina. They appear to have been overpainted at some point in their history, but we have preferred to leave them as acquired rather than remove later surface layers unnecessarily.

At 71 cm high, the tables are relatively tall for guéridons, which gives them a particularly graceful and architectural quality. Their narrow 39 cm diameter makes them practical as occasional tables, lamp tables or flanking tables, while their light construction allows them to sit comfortably within a room without appearing visually heavy.
