A particularly elegant Model 311 dining table, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1956 and produced in Denmark by Søborg Møbelfabrik.

The table is beautifully constructed in teak, most notably with a large solid teak tabletop. Although teak was widely used in Danish furniture during this period, large surfaces such as table tops were almost alwasy veneered, with solid teak generally reserved for legs, edges and structural elements. Teak was an expensive imported material and the use of such a substantial piece of solid timber would have made the Model 311 a considerably more expensive table to produce.

The design itself is beautifully simple. When closed, the tabletop is almost circular, with a gently elliptical form supported on four slender tapered legs. The proportions give the table a surprisingly light appearance considering the amount of solid timber used in its construction.

The two ends of the table separate to accommodate the original solid teak central extension leaf, increasing the length from 124.5 cm to 179 cm. It is a very practical design: relatively compact when closed, but comfortably large enough for six when extended. The original extension leaf has remained with the table and is remarkably consistent in colour and tone with the two ends of the tabletop.

The table retains its original manufacturer's markings to the underside, including the Danish Furnituremakers' Control mark and remnants of the Søborg Møbelfabrik label, confirming its Danish production.

The table has been professionally cleaned and carefully refinished. Several applications of Danish oil were used to revive and nourish the teak before the surface was lightly waxed. The intention was not to make the table appear new, but to present the timber at its best while retaining the character of a piece dating from the 1950s.

The result is a particularly handsome example of the Model 311. The teak has a warm, even tone throughout, including the original extension leaf, and the table remains structurally excellent and ready for regular use.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
