Pierre Forssell (1925–2004) was one of Sweden’s most distinctive post-war designers, best known for his work in brass and his long association with Skultuna. Forssell worked with the historic Swedish manufacturer from 1955 until 1986, producing a remarkable series of objects characterised by simple geometric forms and an inventive approach to the possibilities of sheet brass.

This pair of Aniara candlesticks dates from the 1960s and is a particularly sculptural example of Forssell’s work for Skultuna.

The design is beautifully simple. A tall, slender brass stem rises from a cylindrical base and supports the distinctive candle holder above. The upper section is formed from curved and folded brass, creating an almost circular form with a deep opening cut through its centre.

From different angles the shape changes considerably, appearing almost flat from one direction and much more architectural and three-dimensional from another.

The sculptural upper candle holders can also be unscrewed from their stems. Although this does not appear to have been an intended feature of the Aniara design, it allows the upper sections to be placed directly on a table and used as low candle holders. Forssell also designed low brass candle holders using the same forms, we rather like having the option of using this pair in either way. Sometimes it is nice to have a change.

Both candlesticks are signed by Pierre Forssell to the underside and carry the Skultuna crown mark, numbered 1607 and stamped Sweden.

The brass has been carefully cleaned but not restored, retaining the surface character and patina developed through age and use. There are minor dings, dents and scratches, together with small areas of oxidation, but nothing that overly stands out or feels out of place. Overall, the pair presents beautifully and retains the character we would hope to find in original examples from the period.

A wonderful pair of objects that work equally well as functional candlesticks or simply as small pieces of sculpture.
