A beautifully sculptural brass decanter designed by Pierre Forssell for Skultuna, Sweden, dating from circa 1970.

The decanter is formed from a sweeping brass body, its broad triangular form curving gently from front to back and narrowing towards a cylindrical neck. The simplicity of the construction gives the piece an almost abstract sculptural quality, changing considerably depending on the angle from which it is viewed.

The original stopper is particularly distinctive, combining a solid brass internal stopper with a cylindrical wooden handle. When inserted, the wooden element rises above the brass neck and provides a warm contrast to the metal body.

Forssell worked with Skultuna from 1955 until 1986 and was responsible for introducing a distinctly modern approach to the historic Swedish brass foundry. His work from this period is characterised by restrained geometric forms and an understanding of brass as both a functional and sculptural material.

Part of the appeal of this particular design is the way it sits. The curved underside allows the decanter to rock gently on its base when touched, adding an unexpected element of movement to what is otherwise a remarkably simple object.

We have bought and sold several examples of this decanter over the years and are often asked whether we would actually use one. Although it was designed as a functional decanter, personally we would not. For us, it is simply a beautiful object — something we would be very happy to have sitting on a shelf or desk and enjoy purely for its sculptural quality.

This example has been left completely untouched and retains a particularly attractive natural patina developed over many years. The brass has darkened and varied considerably across the surface, with areas of warmer golden colour appearing beneath. Although the brass could easily be polished, for us the surface is perfect as it is and we have deliberately chosen to leave it untouched.

The decanter remains in generally very good vintage condition, with minor marks and scratches consistent with age and use. The original wooden and brass stopper is also retained.

The base carries Pierre Forssell's engraved signature together with the Skultuna manufacturer's stamp, confirming both the designer and maker.

A particularly elegant piece of Scandinavian modern design, and one which for us works just as well as a small piece of sculpture as it does as a functional object.
