An exceptional set of ten Pierre Jeanneret Office Chairs, dating from 1955, produced in teak and cane.

The model is known as the Office Chair and was designed by Jeanneret for use within the public and institutional buildings of Chandigarh. Although intended for office and institutional settings, the proportions and relatively compact scale of the chairs also make them particularly successful around a dining or meeting table.

What makes this group particularly interesting is that all ten chairs came from the same building and were made by the same hand. Although the dimensions vary slightly, the construction and patination are remarkably consistent throughout the set. Unusually, the chairs have also remained together as a group, rather than being assembled at a later date from individual examples.

The teak has developed a strong and remarkably consistent patina throughout, with the deep colour and natural variation of the wood giving the chairs a warmth that is difficult to reproduce in later examples. We particularly like the way the ten chairs sit together. Although each has its own individual variations in the teak, the overall consistency is striking and gives the group a real sense of history.

The combination of the solid teak frame and hand-caned seat gives the design its characteristic balance of weight and lightness. Jeanneret's approach to the construction is particularly evident in the strong geometric frame, which gives the chairs a distinctly architectural quality while remaining comfortable and practical.

As with all our Pierre Jeanneret pieces, the authenticity and originality of the furniture is of particular importance to us. We have carefully examined the construction, materials and condition of the chairs, and the set retains the character and integrity of the original furniture. The naturally developed patina across all ten chairs is particularly pleasing and an important part of their appeal.

The chairs have been professionally restored in London by a specialist museum-quality furniture restorer. The restoration has been undertaken sympathetically, with the aim of preserving the original character of the chairs while ensuring that they are structurally sound and suitable for continued use.
