An exceptional set of six Pierre Jeanneret Committee Chairs, dating from 1953 and originally produced for the government buildings of Chandigarh, India.

The Committee Chair, also widely referred to as the Senate Chair, is one of Pierre Jeanneret's most distinctive upholstered designs produced for Chandigarh during the early 1950s. The chair combines his characteristic compass-form teak legs with a fully upholstered seat and back and long upholstered armrests, creating a particularly strong and architectural form.

The construction is especially successful when viewed from the side. The tapered teak legs rise to form the distinctive inverted V-shaped supports beneath the arms, while the upholstered seat and back sit within the timber structure. The long horizontal armrests emphasise the geometry of the design and give the chairs a strong profile from every angle.

It is increasingly unusual to find this model as a large group, and the presence of six chairs gives the set considerable impact. The frames sit particularly well together, with a consistent deep colour and patina developed through decades of use in Chandigarh. Small marks, variations and signs of wear remain visible throughout the timber and form an important part of the history and character of the chairs.

The chairs have been professionally restored in London by a specialist museum-quality furniture restorer. The teak frames have been carefully cleaned and waxed rather than refinished, preserving the original surfaces and the rich patina that has developed over time.

All six chairs have been fully reupholstered and are currently presented in white calico, ready for a client's own choice of final upholstery. This gives the opportunity to select a fabric or leather appropriate to the setting while the restoration and upholstery work beneath has already been completed.

The chairs are structurally sound and presented in excellent condition while retaining the age and character that we look for in original Chandigarh furniture. They work particularly well as a set of six around a dining or meeting table, but can equally be used individually or in smaller groups.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.

We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.
