A rare and exceptionally well-preserved Alvar and Aino Aalto Model 91 Dining Table with its original Model A91 Lazy Susan, designed in 1933 and produced in Finland by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku.

The table and Lazy Susan were imported and distributed in Britain by Finmar and both retain their original Finmar labels. They were acquired together and have remained together, making this a particularly complete example of the design.

The large circular tabletop is finished in richly figured Karelian birch veneer, an optional and more expensive finish when new than the standard birch version of the table. The removable Lazy Susan is finished in the same Karelian birch, while the four legs are natural birch. The contrast is subtle, but the figuring of the Karelian birch gives the broad circular surface considerable depth and variation.

The Model A91 Lazy Susan sits freely in the centre of the table and can be completely removed. When in position it rotates, allowing dishes and serving pieces to be passed easily around the table. It is a simple and highly practical addition to a large communal dining table. The fact that the original Lazy Susan has remained with the table is an important part of this particular example, especially as both pieces retain their individual Finmar labels and matching Karelian birch finish.

Beneath the tabletop, the four birch legs are fixed to substantial intersecting wooden supports. The construction gives the large circular top a strong and remarkably simple base, leaving the space beneath the table relatively open.

The table has always been used in a private home and has been very well looked after. It has simply been carefully cleaned and waxed, preserving the original surfaces and finish. The Karelian birch has mellowed to a warm golden-brown colour, with the figuring of the veneer becoming increasingly apparent as the light moves across the surface.

Condition throughout is excellent for a table dating from the 1930s. There are only minor dings, scratches and signs of use, none of which detract from the overall appearance. Structurally the table is excellent, and both the table and Lazy Susan retain a remarkably consistent original surface.

We have dealt in Alvar Aalto furniture for many years and have also collected his work ourselves. For us, what distinguishes this example is not only the rarer Karelian birch finish, but the fact that the table and its original removable Lazy Susan have remained together, both retaining their Finmar labels and surviving in such good original condition.
