A particularly striking long, low bench or coffee table, produced in Denmark during the 1960s and constructed entirely from solid Oregon pine.

The design is remarkably simple, comprising four substantial lengths of Oregon pine supported on two broad rectangular end frames. At 224 cm long and only 26 cm high, the unusually elongated proportions give the piece a strong architectural quality, while the simplicity of the construction allows the grain and colour of the timber to remain very much at the forefront.

The Oregon pine has developed a warm and particularly attractive surface through age and use. The long lengths of timber display the pronounced straight grain characteristic of the material, with subtle variation in colour across the four individual sections. There are marks, small knocks and areas of wear consistent with a piece dating from the 1960s, all of which form part of the character of the piece.

A Danish Furnituremakers' Control burn stamp remains visible to the underside, confirming its Danish manufacture. Although we were told when acquiring the piece that it had been produced by Rud. Rasmussen, we have been unable to find sufficient documentary evidence to substantiate this attribution and therefore prefer to offer it simply as Danish.

Although it may originally have been conceived as a bench, at only 26 cm high it is unusually low for conventional seating. Its considerable 224 cm length and very specific proportions make us wonder whether it may instead have been commissioned for a particular space or interior, although we have no documentation to confirm this. We have searched extensively for another example of this design, both through published references and the wider market, but have been unable to find one. That absence does not prove a commissioned origin, but it does make the possibility feel more plausible.

For us, the piece works particularly well as a long, low coffee table or as a platform for displaying objects. There is an almost Japanese quality to its low proportions, simplicity and emphasis on the natural character of the timber. We feel it would be particularly successful in a hallway or positioned beneath a large painting, where its considerable length and restrained form could be fully appreciated.

The piece has been carefully cleaned and waxed, preserving the surface and patina developed through age and use. Structurally, it required no restoration and remains solid and ready for regular use.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
