A group of eight hand-carved hollock wood trays from Nagaland, north-east India, dating from the mid-20th century. Originally used for drying grain, each tray has been individually carved, with subtle variations in shape, depth, surface and handle formation.
Their elongated oval forms and simple perforated ends give them a strong sculptural quality, while the differing tones, tool marks and irregular profiles emphasise their hand-made character.
Today, they can be displayed individually or as a group on the wall, or stacked horizontally, where the variations in thickness, profile, colour and patina become particularly apparent.
The trays have been gently cleaned and waxed, retaining their original surface, patina and signs of age. Structurally they are in good condition, with minor marks, scratches and wear consistent with their age and original use.
They are sold as a group of eight.
Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
