A particularly elegant Model 200 writing desk, designed by Svend Aage Madsen in 1958 and produced in Denmark by Sigurd Hansen.
The desk has a beautifully restrained form, combining a rosewood-veneered writing surface and drawer fronts with a slender frame. The gently tapered legs continue upwards along the sides of the desk, creating a particularly distinctive junction between the frame and the main body. A raised lip runs along the back of the writing surface, with subtly shaped ends that follow the lines of the desk.
The richness of the rosewood is an important part of the design. The top displays particularly attractive figuring, while the two drawer fronts have been carefully selected to create a balanced appearance across the front of the desk.
Two lockable drawers sit beneath the writing surface, each with a recessed handle and birch interior. The original key has remained with the desk and operates the locks. The drawers are beautifully made, with dovetailed construction and a quality of finish that is equally considered inside and out.
The desk retains a burnt manufacturer's stamp beneath one of the drawers, identifying its production by Sigurd Hansen in Denmark.
We purchased the desk directly from the son of the original owners. His parents had received the desk as a wedding gift, and it remained with the same family until we acquired it. The desk had always been carefully looked after, which is reflected in its remarkably well-preserved condition.
Very little restoration was required. The desk has been professionally cleaned and waxed, retaining the character and surface developed through age and use. There are minor marks consistent with a piece dating from the 1950s, but nothing that detracts from its overall appearance. The desk is structurally excellent and ready for regular use.
Its relatively compact proportions make the Model 200 particularly practical today. It provides a generous enough surface for regular use without the scale of a larger executive desk, making it equally suitable as a writing desk or for a smaller home office.
