A particularly attractive German Bauhaus desk lamp dating from the 1930s, combining a black painted aluminium shade and circular base with a long curved metal stem.

Purchased in Germany and described as German 1930s when acquired, the lamp is unmarked and we have been unable to establish its designer or manufacturer. Its restrained construction and emphasis on function are characteristic of German modernist lighting of the Bauhaus period, when adjustable task lighting was reduced to simple geometric forms and practical mechanical elements.

The design is particularly successful. A single curved metal stem rises from the circular black base before terminating directly at the shade, giving the lamp a remarkably fluid profile. The stem pivots at the base and can be moved forwards and backwards through a considerable range, allowing both the height and reach of the lamp to be altered.

The black painted aluminium shade is independently adjustable and can be rotated to direct the light precisely. Together, the two movements allow the lamp to assume a surprisingly wide variety of positions, from an upright desk light to a much lower and more extended reading position.

The original black painted finish has been preserved and shows minor scratches and areas of wear consistent with age and use. The aluminium shade has some surface scratches but is free from dents. The metal stem has developed an attractive naturally aged patina, which we have deliberately retained.

The lamp has simply been carefully cleaned and professionally rewired. No other restoration has been undertaken.

Although the designer and manufacturer remain unknown, it is a particularly well-proportioned and characterful example of German lighting from the Bauhaus period. The sweeping curved stem gives the lamp a strong sculptural quality while remaining entirely functional as an adjustable desk light.
