An unusual set of four Pierre Jeanneret Box Armchairs, dating from circa 1953–54 and originally produced for the government buildings of Chandigarh, India.

The Box Armchair is a less commonly encountered design within Jeanneret's Chandigarh furniture and differs considerably from the more familiar V-leg chairs associated with the project. Rather than relying on the characteristic compass-shaped supports, the chair is constructed around a strong rectilinear teak frame, with the arms continuing down to form the front legs and returning along the floor towards the rear. The open structure gives the chair a particularly architectural quality while remaining remarkably simple in construction.

The seat and gently angled back are both woven in cane, providing a light contrast to the substantial solid teak frame. The slightly curved upper back rail and subtle shaping of the arms soften what is otherwise a very geometric design.

These four chairs were acquired together and have remained as a set. This is particularly appealing with a model that we encounter considerably less frequently than many of Jeanneret's better-known Chandigarh chairs. The four frames are closely matched in colour and character, with a rich, heavily patinated surface developed through decades of institutional use.

Some of the chairs retain their original institutional markings. Throughout the set there are knocks, scratches, rubbing and variations in colour accumulated during their working life in Chandigarh. We have deliberately retained these signs of use, which form an important part of the history of the chairs and give the set much of its character.

The chairs have been structurally restored in London by our specialist furniture conservator. All of the timber components are original and the teak has been carefully cleaned and waxed rather than refinished, preserving the original surfaces and patina. The cane seats and backs have been replaced by hand and sympathetically aged to sit naturally alongside the original timber.

A particularly unusual opportunity to acquire four matching examples of one of the less commonly seen armchair designs from the Chandigarh project. The set works exceptionally well around a dining or meeting table, while the strong geometric construction also gives each chair considerable presence when used individually.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.

We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.
