An exceptional set of three Pierre Jeanneret Conference Armchairs, produced in solid teak with hand-caned seats and backs and the distinctive V-frame construction characteristic of the design.

Designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh, India, during the 1950s, the Conference Armchair was created for use within the city’s public and institutional buildings. Its combination of substantial teak construction and open cane work gives the chair a particularly successful balance of strength and lightness, while the angular frame provides the architectural character for which Jeanneret’s Chandigarh furniture is known.

We have grouped these chairs as a set of three as they were made by the same hand, are the same dimensions, came from the same building and have the same strong patina across all three chairs. The teak has developed a rich, deep patina through age and use, with natural variation between the frames giving each chair its own character while retaining a pleasing overall consistency.

The open cane seats and backs provide a lighter counterpoint to the substantial teak frames and make the chairs equally suited to use around a dining, meeting or conference table.

We particularly like the way the chairs sit together as a group. We are possibly a little odd, but we have a particular liking for odd numbers. Their strong geometric form and warm, naturally aged teak allow them to work comfortably in both contemporary and period settings, while their relatively compact proportions make them versatile beyond their original institutional use.

The chairs are in good vintage condition and have been carefully restored in London by a specialist museum-quality furniture restorer. All three frames are structurally solid. The cane seats and backs have been replaced and carefully aged to complement the deep patina of the teak, with the restoration carried out sympathetically to preserve the character of the original furniture.

As with all of our Chandigarh pieces, restoration has been undertaken with the aim of preserving the character and integrity of the original furniture while ensuring that the chairs are structurally sound and suitable for continued use.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture.

We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the authenticity, provenance or restoration of our Jeanneret pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
