A particularly interesting Cassina edition of the LC4 Chaise Longue, the Villa Church model, produced circa 2013 and based upon the earliest version of the design created in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand.

The LC4 is one of the most recognisable pieces of 20th-century furniture, but the Villa Church edition has a particularly interesting history. The original version of the chaise longue was developed in 1928 for the interiors of the Church residence at Ville-d’Avray, outside Paris. The design was subsequently exhibited at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1929 and continued to evolve before entering wider production.

Cassina's Villa Church edition returns specifically to this early version of the design and reproduces its distinctive combination of colours and materials. Rather than the predominantly black base associated with the standard LC4, the Villa Church model uses a two-colour structure, with a light blue painted steel cross-member and basalt-grey supporting elements. The mattress is upholstered in grey hide from Gascon cattle, recreating the unusual material and colour combination of the original Villa Church version.

The construction remains wonderfully simple. The sculptural chrome-plated tubular steel upper frame supports the body and rests freely upon the separate base. Rather than being mechanically fixed into a particular position, the upper frame can move along the base, allowing the angle of recline to be altered simply by shifting the user's weight.

This particular example retains its original grey Gascon cattle hide, together with its original headrest and supporting straps. The straps remain firm and supportive. The combination of the softly coloured natural hide, polished chrome and subtle blue-grey painted base gives this version a very different character from the more familiar black LC4.

The chaise is presented in very good original condition. It has been carefully cleaned but has required no restoration. The hide, headrest, straps, chrome structure and painted base all show only minor signs of age and careful use.

We very rarely sell modern productions of classic designs, even when they are produced by the authorised licence holder. We make an exception for the Cassina LC collection and particularly for the LC4. It is a design we have always loved. We find it extraordinarily pleasing visually, particularly when viewed in profile, but it is also genuinely one of the most comfortable pieces of furniture of its type.

For us, the Villa Church edition is especially appealing. It retains everything we like about the LC4, while the softer grey Gascon cattle hide and unusual blue-grey base give it a character quite distinct from the standard production. The historical connection to the earliest 1928 version of the chaise makes it considerably more interesting than simply being an alternative colourway.
