An original Cassina production of the LC4 Chaise Longue, dating from the 1990s and retaining its original black cowhide upholstery, leather headrest and supporting straps.

Designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, the LC4 is one of the most recognisable pieces of 20th-century furniture. Conceived as a machine à repos — a machine for resting — the design was developed around the position and movement of the human body rather than around a conventional chair structure.

The chaise is formed from two distinct elements. The sculptural chrome-plated tubular steel upper frame supports the body and rests freely upon a separate black steel base.  Rather than being mechanically fixed in one position, the upper frame can be moved along the base, allowing the angle of recline to be adjusted simply by shifting the user's weight. This remarkably simple arrangement is central to both the appearance and comfort of the design.

Cassina acquired the exclusive worldwide production rights to the first Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand models in 1964 and began producing the collection in 1965. The LC4 has remained one of the most celebrated designs within the Cassina collection ever since.

This example dates from the 1990s and retains its original black cowhide upholstery and black leather cylindrical headrest. The original supporting straps also remain in place and are still firm. The contrast between the black hide, polished chrome and restrained black base works particularly well and emphasises the extraordinary profile of the chaise.

The piece retains its Cassina manufacturer's mark to the base together with its production number, LC4 23370, stamped into the chrome-plated frame. We have photographed both markings in detail.

Condition is very good. The chrome remains bright and clean, while the original hide, leather headrest and black base show only the expected signs of careful use and age. The chaise has been cleaned but has not required any major restoration, and the original straps remain firm and supportive.

We very rarely sell modern productions of classic designs, preferring generally to concentrate on period and vintage furniture. We make an exception for the Cassina LC collection and particularly for the LC4. It is a design we have always loved. Visually, we find it difficult to fault: the sweeping chrome frame is almost sculptural when viewed in profile, yet the design is also extraordinarily comfortable to use. It is one of those relatively rare pieces of furniture where the visual appeal and practical function are equally successful.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
