An original Pierre Jeanneret three-panel folding screen, dating from circa 1957–58 and purchased by us in India with provenance to a government building in Chandigarh.

The screen is constructed from solid teak, with three substantial rectangular frames joined by their original hinges. The simple construction is typical of Jeanneret’s furniture for Chandigarh, relying on proportion, material and the practical requirements of the piece rather than unnecessary detail.

When we purchased the screen, remnants of the original green and red Skai remained within the panels. These were no longer in a condition to retain, but their contrasting colours were something we particularly liked and wanted to reference when restoring the piece.

We therefore asked our upholsterer to make new panels using woven horsehair fabric by John Boyd. We have always loved this material and felt its texture worked particularly well alongside the aged teak. Rather than using the same colour on both sides, we chose two contrasting tones, referencing the different colours of Skai originally found on the screen. The result gives each side a subtly different appearance while sitting very naturally with the colour and patina of the timber.

All of the wooden components are original. The teak frame has been structurally restored by our trusted conservator and carefully cleaned and waxed, retaining the marks, wear and patina developed through decades of use. The original hinges have also been retained, and the three panels fold and articulate as they should.

The screen works particularly well as a room divider, but equally as a freestanding architectural element within a room. The ability to fold the three panels allows its position and overall width to be adjusted depending on the space, while the different horsehair colours on either side give the piece two distinct appearances.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture for nearly nineteen years and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
