A striking set of three Rosett candlesticks, designed by Pierre Forssell for Skultuna in 1969 and produced in solid brass.

The Rosett is one of Forssell's most distinctive designs for Skultuna. Each candlestick is constructed around a tall rectangular brass body, surrounded at its centre by a series of sharply folded geometric forms. These projecting triangular planes meet and overlap around the body, creating an almost architectural composition that changes considerably as the candlestick is viewed from different angles.

The design becomes particularly interesting when several examples are placed together. The projecting geometric forms can be arranged to visually interlock, creating an almost continuous zig-zag composition across the three candlesticks. They work particularly well grouped in this way, but are equally strong separated and displayed individually.

Pierre Forssell worked with Skultuna from 1955 until 1986 and produced some of the company's most distinctive modern designs. The Rosett was designed in 1969 and is a particularly good example of his ability to transform a simple functional object into something highly sculptural. The design remains in production by Skultuna today.

These are vintage examples and retain the character acquired through age and use. The brass has developed a warm and varied surface, with areas of oxidation, discolouration and minor marks throughout. We particularly like this natural ageing and have chosen to preserve the surface rather than polish the candlesticks back to a uniform bright brass finish.

The underside carries the Skultuna manufacturer's mark, including the company's crown device, Skultuna 1607 and Sweden.

For us, the appeal of the Rosett lies as much in its sculptural quality as in its function. The combination of the tall, restrained rectangular body with the almost origami-like folded brass forms around its centre makes the candlesticks particularly effective simply displayed on a shelf, table or desk.
