A beautifully made British table mirror dating from the 1950s, combining a substantial white marble base with a slender polished steel frame and original circular mirror.

The design is exceptionally simple and well considered. The circular mirror is held within a polished steel outer frame and supported on a single narrow stem rising from the marble base. The mirror can be tilted and adjusted within the surrounding frame, allowing it to be positioned at different angles while retaining the clean, almost graphic quality of the design.

The contrast between the weight of the solid marble base and the lightness of the polished steel structure is particularly successful. Viewed from the side, very little material has been used, while from the front the two concentric circles of the mirror and its supporting frame give the piece a strong sculptural quality.

The designer and manufacturer are currently unknown. We have, however, bought and sold several examples of this model over the years and have always found them in the UK. This example was also acquired in the UK, and we therefore believe the design and manufacture to be British.

The original mirror glass remains in place and the adjustable mechanism works well, holding the mirror securely in position. The marble base is also original and has only minor marks consistent with its age and use. Overall, the mirror is in very good vintage condition.

A particularly elegant piece of post-war British design, practical as a dressing or table mirror but equally appealing as a small sculptural object.
