A beautifully made British table mirror dating from the 1950s, combining a substantial white marble base with a slender black-painted steel support, polished steel frame and original circular mirror.

The design is exceptionally simple and well considered. The circular mirror is held within a polished steel outer frame, which sits within a black-painted steel support rising from the marble base. The mirror can be tilted and adjusted through a wide range of angles, allowing it to be positioned as required while retaining the clean, almost graphic quality of the design.

The contrast between the substantial marble base and the lightness of the metal structure is particularly successful. Viewed from the side, the construction is remarkably slender, while from the front the circular mirror and curved supporting frame give the piece a strong sculptural quality.

The designer and manufacturer are currently unknown. We have, however, bought and sold several examples of this model over the years and have always found them in the UK. This example was also acquired in the UK, and we therefore believe the design and manufacture to be British.

The original mirror glass remains in place, together with its original red backing. The adjustable mechanism works well and holds the mirror securely at different angles. The marble base is also original, with only minor marks consistent with its age and use. The mirror has simply been cleaned and has undergone no restoration. Overall, it remains in very good vintage condition.

A particularly elegant piece of post-war British design, practical as a dressing or table mirror but equally appealing as a small sculptural object.
