This is a particularly interesting example of Serge Mouille’s Grand Signal luminous column floor lamp, originally designed in 1962 and produced here as an official 2013 reissue.

The Signal collection represents a more architectural side of Mouille’s work, moving away from the articulated, insect-like forms for which he is best known and instead treating light as an element within a simple sculptural form.

Mouille was trained as a silversmith and became renowned for the precision, craftsmanship and sculptural quality of his metalwork. These qualities are particularly evident in the Signal collection, where the apparent simplicity of the forms belies the skill and precision required to produce them.

This example was produced in France by Editions Serge Mouille, using the original designs, proportions and manufacturing specifications. The tall, vertical column is constructed from brushed and anodised black aluminium, giving it a deep, graphic appearance with a subtle metallic surface. At 192 cm high, the column has a strong presence within an interior without relying on an elaborate form. The concealed light source sits within the column, illuminating the interior and producing a soft, atmospheric glow rather than the more focused light associated with Mouille’s directional lamps.

The column rises from a simple square base measuring 33 × 33 cm, giving the piece a strong architectural presence while retaining the restrained quality characteristic of Mouille’s work. We like the way the design has been reduced to such a simple form, while still making the light itself the focus. It is as much a sculptural object as it is a functional light.

The lamp bears its stamped individual serial number and year of manufacture, marking it as an Editions Serge Mouille production from 2013.

We do not generally sell contemporary reissues of historic designs, even when they are produced by the original manufacturer. This piece is a rare exception.

We have a particular affection for Serge Mouille’s work and have bought and sold a number of original vintage examples over the years. The Grand Signal is one of his less commonly encountered designs and is much less frequently seen than his more recognisable lighting.

Important vintage examples of the Grand Signal can command prices in the high five figures and, on occasion, have achieved six-figure prices. We acquired this example because we felt it offered an unusual opportunity to own one of Mouille’s less commonly seen designs at a fraction of the price of an important vintage example.

It is also a design that has not been reproduced or copied to the same extent as some of Mouille’s more famous models. The combination of its restrained architectural character and production to the original specifications made it a piece we were very happy to acquire.

Although we would not normally keep a contemporary reissue for our own collection, this is one of those rare pieces that we would happily have kept for ourselves.

The lamp is in excellent used condition, retaining its deep black finish with only minimal superficial signs of handling consistent with careful residential use.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
