A rare pair of Model 262 table lamps, designed by Tito Agnoli in 1958 and produced in Italy by O-Luce.

The lamps are remarkably compact, standing only 18 cm high, and combine a circular black enamelled brass base with a tall rectangular body and opal white Perspex diffusers. The contrast between the dark metal and softly illuminated Perspex gives the lamps a very architectural appearance despite their small scale.

The quality of manufacture is exceptional. This is something we have consistently found in Agnoli lighting produced by O-Luce during this period, where even relatively small pieces were made with considerable precision and attention to detail. The fit of the Perspex panels, enamelled metalwork and revolving mechanism all reflect that quality.

The most interesting aspect of the design is the revolving shade. The Perspex panels and dark metal body can be rotated around the central support, changing both the direction of the light and the appearance of the lamp. Depending on their position, the lamps can present a predominantly dark face, a fully illuminated Perspex surface, or a combination of the two.

This becomes especially effective when the pair is used together. Each lamp can be positioned independently, allowing the relationship between light and dark surfaces to be altered simply by rotating the shades.

The Model 262 is documented in the O-Luce catalogue raisonné and is a design we have rarely encountered. We have been unable to locate another pair currently on the market, and their survival together makes this an especially appealing set.

For us, their appeal lies in how much Agnoli achieves with such a small and apparently simple object. The construction is restrained, but the ability to rotate the shades completely changes the character of the lamps and the light they produce.

Both lamps remain in very good vintage condition. There are minor surface marks consistent with their age, but nothing we find distracting. The Perspex diffusers remain intact and both revolving mechanisms operate smoothly.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
