An exceptional vintage floor lamp designed by Bernard Schottlander c1955. Schottlander was celebrated for his innovative approach to lighting design and his sculptural use of form, and this lamp perfectly embodies the refined simplicity and playful geometry that have made his work so enduringly collectible.
The lamp features a slender black metal stem rising from a weighted flat circular base, supporting three arms of varying lengths that rotate independently on their horizontal axis. This adjustable asymmetrical composition creates a dynamic architectural silhouette while allowing each light source to be positioned as required, making the lamp equally suited to ambient lighting, reading, or as a striking sculptural statement.
A particularly fascinating feature is the arrangement of the three conical shades, finished in red, white, and black, each differing in size. The largest shade is mounted on the shortest arm, while the smallest is positioned on the longest arm, creating a carefully balanced composition with the largest shade at the top and the smallest at the bottom. The design exemplifies Schottlander's remarkable ability to unite functional lighting with sculptural composition.
This particular model is exceptionally rare. Aside from the present example, we have never encountered another. Schottlander's workshop production was always limited, with many designs surviving in only a handful of known examples and some believed to have been unique commissions or prototypes.
It is unusual for us to include a personal note within a catalogue description, but this lamp deserves one. It remained in our showroom for over a month while we debated whether it should join our own collection rather than be offered for sale. Ultimately, we decided to make it available, although not without some hesitation, as we suspect another example may not appear for many years, if ever. If, however, you happen to own a Bernard Schottlander lamp that you are considering selling, we would be delighted to hear from you. Experience suggests we are rather better at buying than selling.
The lamp is presented in excellent vintage condition. The painted finish appears to be original throughout, and all three shades are free from dents or distortions. There are minor areas of paint loss across the shades, arms, stem, and base, consistent with age and careful use. These subtle signs of wear are noted for complete accuracy but are only visible on close inspection and do not detract from the lamp's outstanding overall presentation. It is evident that this piece has been cherished and exceptionally well cared for throughout its life.
