A very rare example of British mid-century modern design, this desk lamp was created by sculptor and designer Bernard Schottlander in 1951. While all vintage Schottlander pieces made in his studio are highly sought-after, this particular model is exceptionally rare — a true collector’s piece.
Part of his iconic exploration of functional lighting, this lamp is closely associated with the celebrated Mantis series, known for its sculptural elegance and refined engineering. Inspired by the poise and motion of a praying mantis, the design features a delicate, cantilevered body crafted from painted steel. A chromed, adjustable socket supports the asymmetric conical head, allowing a wide range of movement and control over light direction.
The shade — finished in Schottlander’s signature vibrant yellow — is made from painted aluminium and retains its original dynamic presence. The overall composition blurs the line between lighting and kinetic sculpture, offering not just illumination but a striking piece of architectural art.
The lamp is presented in good vintage condition. There are a few small dents to the shade, as expected for a piece of this age, and it has been professionally rewired for safe use in the UK.
We’ve listed this lamp fully aware that we may never have the opportunity to acquire another. It is a truly special piece — one that will undoubtedly bring joy to its next custodian.
