A pair of X-frame office chairs designed by Pierre Jeanneret for Chandigarh, India, dating from 1963. The chairs began their working lives together at the Boys’ Hostel of Punjab Engineering College. Each retains its painted hostel marking on the rear seat rail, with the individual inventory numbers ‘347/II’ and ‘341/II’.

The X-frame is clearest in profile. On each side, two lengths of teak cross just below the seat and rise to meet opposite ends of the armrest. The caned seat sits almost level between them. The short backrest curves gently across the width of the chair and tilts slightly backwards, leaving a gap above the seat. These upright proportions distinguish the office chair from Jeanneret’s lower, more reclined Cross Easy Chair.

All wooden components are original to their respective chairs. Our conservator structurally restored both frames and lightly cleaned and waxed the teak. The timber retains the small dings, dents and scratches acquired through use, and the painted lettering remains legible.

The legs have warped slightly over time, but both chairs sit flat on the floor. The cane has been replaced on both seats and backrests and toned to complement the aged teak.

We have specialised in Pierre Jeanneret furniture since 2007 and have extensive experience in identifying, sourcing, restoring and selling his work. Given the number of later reproductions and incorrectly attributed pieces now on the market, we understand the importance of provenance, construction, materials and restoration when assessing Chandigarh furniture. We are always happy to discuss these aspects in detail and answer any questions regarding the attribution, provenance or restoration of our Chandigarh pieces.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.

High-resolution photographs, detailed condition reports and video inspections are available upon request.

We offer local, national and international shipping.
