A set of six rosewood Scandia Prince dining chairs, designed by Hans Brattrud for Hove Møbler in 1957.
We have always liked these chairs and have bought and sold many sets over the years. In our view, the Scandia Prince is one of the most successful high-back chairs of its period. Its elegant proportions and distinctive construction give it a strong presence, while its versatility allows it to sit comfortably with a wide range of tables and interiors.
Over the years we have paired these chairs with marble, country and rosewood tables, and they work equally well in both contemporary and period settings. This particular set is unusual for its very light rosewood veneer. We especially like the contrast this creates with darker rosewood, although the chairs would work equally well with marble, natural wood or other finishes.
Another detail we have always liked is the way the chairs stack. Despite their sculptural high-back form, they nest together remarkably neatly, making the set both visually striking and highly practical.
The chairs are in excellent vintage condition. The frames are structurally solid, with no evidence of cracking to the plywood or historical structural restoration. The wooden slats have been cleaned and waxed, while the chrome-plated steel shows minor areas of wear consistent with age and use. As with all vintage furniture, there may be minor signs of age and previous use, but the chairs have been carefully prepared and are presented in excellent overall condition.
