A rare early Alvar Aalto Occasional Table, Model 75, designed in 1931–32 and produced in Finland by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku.

The table was imported and distributed in Britain by Finmar and retains its original Finmar label to the underside, identifying it as an early pre-war example from the 1930s.

The Model 75 is an interesting example of Aalto’s early exploration of laminated and moulded birch. The table is constructed around two continuous laminated-birch side frames, which curve at floor level before rising vertically to support the upper surface. Between them sits a second, lower shelf, giving the relatively compact table two useful levels while maintaining a very open and lightweight structure.

Both the upper surface and lower shelf are formed from birch-veneered plywood with gently upturned edges. These curved edges are a small but important detail, softening the otherwise rectilinear form of the table and clearly expressing the possibilities of moulded plywood that Aalto was exploring during this early period.

This particular example has survived in remarkably original condition. There are no signs of restoration or repolishing, and the original birch surfaces have mellowed naturally to a warm golden colour. The table has simply been carefully cleaned and waxed, preserving the surface and patina that have developed over more than ninety years.

The table is in good vintage condition and remains structurally solid. There are the usual small marks, scratches, dings and variations in colour that we would expect from a piece of this age, but nothing that particularly detracts from its overall appearance. The laminated frame, upper surface and lower shelf all retain a very good and consistent original surface.

For us, the appeal of this Model 75 lies in the simplicity of its construction and the quality of its surviving original surface. Early Aalto furniture that has avoided unnecessary restoration or refinishing is something we always value.
