A particularly elegant Model 311 dining table, designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1956 and produced in Denmark by Søborg Møbelfabrik.

The table is constructed in teak and has a beautifully simple oval form, with the gently rounded top supported on four slender tapered legs. The restraint of the design is typical of Hvidt and Mølgaard-Nielsen's work during the period, relying on proportion, construction and the natural character of the timber rather than unnecessary decoration.

A particularly practical aspect of the Model 311 is its extension system. The two ends of the table separate to accommodate the original central extension leaf, considerably increasing the usable dining surface while retaining the proportions of the original design. The extension leaf has remained with the table and is remarkably consistent in colour and tone with the two ends of the tabletop.

The table retains its original manufacturer's markings to the underside, including the Danish Furnituremakers' Control mark and remnants of the Søborg Møbelfabrik label, confirming its Danish production.

The table has been professionally cleaned and carefully refinished. Several applications of Danish oil were used to revive and nourish the teak before the surface was lightly waxed. The intention was not to make the table appear new, but to present the timber at its best while retaining the character of a piece dating from the 1950s.

The result is a particularly handsome example of the Model 311. The teak has a warm, even tone throughout, including the original extension leaf, and the table remains structurally excellent and ready for regular use.

For us, one of the strengths of the Model 311 is its versatility. In its closed position it is a relatively compact oval dining table, while the original extension leaf provides a considerably larger surface when required without compromising the simplicity of the design.
