A wonderful pair of architect-designed low-slung armchairs, produced in India during the 1960s.

Although the designer and manufacturer are currently unknown, the chairs have a distinctly architectural quality and sit comfortably within the broader language of Indian modernist furniture produced during this period. Their low proportions, substantial teak construction and simple geometric form inevitably bring to mind furniture produced for Chandigarh, although we have found no evidence to suggest a direct connection and would not attribute them as such.

The chairs are exceptionally well constructed from substantial sections of solid teak. The frames are particularly expressive, with exposed bridle joints and through-tenons forming an important part of the design rather than being concealed. The broad armrests and low horizontal structure give the chairs a strong architectural presence, while the open woven seats and backs keep the overall appearance surprisingly light.

When we acquired the chairs, they retained their original woven jute seats and backs. Unfortunately, the jute had deteriorated to the point where it was no longer possible to use the chairs safely. Rather than attempt to imitate an aged material, we chose to have them rewoven in flag halyard cord. We felt this was sympathetic to the original construction while giving the chairs a slightly cleaner and more contemporary appearance.

The teak frames have been carefully cleaned and waxed, preserving the numerous marks, small dents, variations in colour and rich patina developed through decades of use. We have deliberately avoided over-restoring the timber, as these signs of age are an important part of the character of the chairs.

We originally purchased a group of ten of these chairs. Over the years we have sold the others individually and in pairs, and this is the final pair remaining from the original group. We had intended to keep them for ourselves, which is why they have remained with us until now.

They are particularly successful as occasional or lounge chairs. The low seat, broad arms and open construction give them a relaxed presence, while the substantial teak frames make them visually strong from every angle.

We have always had a particular fondness for these chairs. Despite not knowing who designed them, the quality of the construction, unusual proportions and confident use of solid teak give them a character that we find increasingly difficult to find. Having kept this final pair back for ourselves, we are offering them for sale somewhat reluctantly.
