An exceptionally rare pair of console tables by Jean-Michel Frank, dating to 1940 and exemplifying the designer’s unmistakable language of disciplined minimalism and refined material contrast.
Executed in painted iron with woven rattan tops, the tables demonstrate Frank’s masterful balance between austerity and warmth. The slender, attenuated iron frames lend architectural lightness, while the textured rattan introduces subtle tactility and organic depth. Their long, narrow proportions make them particularly versatile—ideal for an entrance hall, positioned behind a sofa, or installed as sculptural wall consoles in a restrained interior.
Frank’s work is celebrated for its radical restraint: an ability to reduce form to essential geometry while preserving an atmosphere of quiet luxury. The dialogue here between industrial iron and natural fibre reflects his pioneering use of humble materials elevated through proportion and precision.
Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the Comité Jean-Michel Frank, this documented pair dates from the final period of the designer’s career and represents a significant and collectible example of his work.
The consoles are overall in good vintage condition. The iron frames display age-related patina and have been lightly overpainted at some stage in their history.
The rattan is original, intact, and without breaks, showing honest signs of age. It appears to have been overstained at some point.
Since certification, we have undertaken no restoration.
For context, the same model consoles were sold at Sotheby's in November 2024; the condition report noted replaced rattan, which did not affect the realised value.
We have considered removing the later overpaint and replacing the rattan, carefully toning any new work so as not to appear overly fresh. Should this be undertaken, the original rattan would be retained and could be reinstated if required. We have extensive experience restoring Jean-Michel Frank pieces and would welcome discussion with prospective buyers regarding a sensitive, museum-grade restoration tailored to preference.
