A truly exceptional and historically significant set of nesting tables designed by the legendary Marcel Breuer for Isokon in 1936. This design marks a pivotal moment in early modernist furniture — celebrated for its innovative use of bent plywood and its seamless fusion of form and function. Today, examples are held in major museum collections worldwide.
This original vintage set showcases Breuer’s deep material understanding and his commitment to rational, stripped-back design for modern living. As Isokon’s design director, Breuer conceived these tables to be both visually refined and highly practical: a large main table paired with two smaller ones that nest neatly beneath it, conserving space without compromising on presence.
Crafted from beautifully moulded birch plywood, the tables are defined by softly rounded corners, clean lines, and elegant, exposed edges — all hallmarks of 1930s modernism. The birch’s pale tone and subtle grain bring warmth to the minimalist profile, while the curved plywood structure speaks to Breuer’s groundbreaking engineering.
Most notably, each table bears the highly sought-after “Made in Estonia” stamp on the underside, confirming manufacture in the late 1930s by the A.M. Luther factory in Tallinn. Produced under license for Isokon during the brief but influential period of Breuer’s direct involvement, these Estonian-made examples are particularly rare and highly sought after by collectors of early modernist design.
The set is presented in remarkable vintage condition, with a rich, even patina consistent with nearly a century of careful use. The construction remains solid and lightweight, making the tables just as functional and striking today as they were at the time of their conception.
