A particularly unusual curved bench, probably dating from the 1970s - 80s, combining a substantial upholstered crescent-shaped seat with a beautifully made tubular chrome-plated steel frame.

Rather than following the conventional straight line of a bench, the seat describes a generous sweeping curve, with the tubular steel frame following the same radius around both the inner and outer edges. The upholstered base sits neatly within the frame, giving the piece a very resolved appearance and emphasising its distinctive geometry.

The bench is considerable in scale, measuring approximately 239 cm around the outer curve and 189 cm around the inner curve. Despite these dimensions, the low backless form and slender chrome frame give it a surprisingly light presence within a room.

We acquired the bench at auction in the UK and unfortunately have no information regarding its original designer or manufacturer. There are no labels or identifying marks, although the quality of construction suggests that it was a considered and well-made piece of furniture.

We have searched extensively for another example of this design but have so far been unable to find one. Its highly specific form and construction make us wonder whether the bench may originally have been commissioned for a particular interior rather than produced as part of a standard furniture range. We have no documentation to confirm this and therefore prefer to leave the designer and manufacturer unattributed.

We had the bench professionally reupholstered and chose a soft mohair velvet, which works particularly well against the polished chrome frame. The restrained upholstery allows the shape and construction of the piece to remain very much at the forefront.

The bench is comfortable and entirely practical for regular use. We particularly like the idea of it positioned within a large bay window, where the curved form could respond naturally to the architecture. It would work equally well in a bedroom or dressing room, entrance hall, reception area, or within a boutique or retail interior where it could be viewed from several directions.

The chrome-plated tubular steel frame is well made and remains structurally solid, with age and wear consistent with the period. The bench is ready for regular use.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
