A rare original pair of early Alvar Aalto Model 64 tall stools, designed in 1935 and

produced in Finland by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas Oy, Turku.

The stools were imported and distributed in Britain by Finmar and both retain their original Finmar labels. Having remained together as a pair and sharing the same provenance, they are a particularly attractive example of Aalto’s early pre-war furniture produced for the British market.

Constructed entirely from birch, each stool has a circular seat supported on four of

Aalto’s characteristic bent birch L-legs. A circular laminated birch footrest joins the four legs lower down, giving the tall structure additional support while providing a practical footrest. The edge of each seat retains the distinctive finger-jointed construction found on early Aalto furniture.

The stools have beautifully simple proportions. The long vertical L-legs give them an architectural quality, while the circular seats and footrests soften the structure. Used as a pair, the subtle differences in their surfaces and wear make it clear that these are early pieces that have remained together rather than later matched examples.

We have dealt in Alvar Aalto furniture for many years and have also collected his work ourselves. Finding an original pair of early Model 64 stools retaining both Finmar labels is especially appealing.

The stools have been carefully cleaned and waxed rather than over-restored and retain a wonderful depth of colour and patina. The birch has mellowed to a rich golden-brown through decades of use, with numerous small dings, dents, scratches and marks throughout. The seats show especially good wear and surface variation. For us, these signs of use are an important part of the character of the stools and exactly what we would hope to find on pieces of this age.

Viewing is warmly welcomed at our West London showroom.
